About this role

The Loomex Group is looking for an assistant airport manager to support the operations at Peterborough Airport. The assistant airport manager will be responsible for many administrative duties related to the airport’s day-to-day operations, including office and airside tasks. The incumbent will also be responsible for a variety of safety-sensitive functions.

The assistant airport manager will report to the airport manager.

What you’ll do

  • Support the airport manager’s daily operational and regulatory duties.
  • Fill in for the airport manager in their absence.
  • Work duty manager shifts as required.
  • Assist in the creation of policies, procedures, and documents.
  • Monitor airside and groundside operations, relaying UNICOM advisories to aircraft and escorting people and vehicles airside.
  • Staff the reception area to provide frontline assistance to clients (when not completing required inspections).
  • Supervise and delegate airport operations staff, duty managers, and ground staff (as required).
  • Work with the airport manager to improve the efficiency of the airport’s operations and processes.
  • Provide administrative support to the airport manager or compliance team (as required).
  • Monitor airport activities to ensure airside safety and security.
  • Ensure the airport adheres to Airport Inspection Program and Safety Management System regulations.
  • Ensure regular inspections are completed, as well as reports on facilities, runways, fences, wildlife control, and lighting equipment conditions.
  • Perform minor maintenance as needed.
  • Gather information for airport users regarding local air traffic procedures, arrival and departure routes, noise abatement procedures, weather conditions, airport facilities, and other local services.
  • Explain and enforce airport rules and regulations, recommending new and modified policies as needed.
  • Remain on-call (when required) and respond to the airport in the event of an emergency.
  • Initiate emergency responses and activate the airport’s emergency response plan during airside and groundside operations.
  • Assist and support distressed or disabled aircraft or groundside vehicles.
  • Assist in emergency operations by providing first aid, operating rescue equipment, operating radios, providing information, and notifying fire and emergency services.
  • Assist with special events and security.
  • Assign tie-down spaces and collect rental fees.
  • Review and maintain inventory of Peterborough Airport merchandise.
  • Complete invoicing on behalf of the City of Peterborough.
  • Interact with internal and external clients in a courteous manner, maintaining a professional appearance and wearing a company-supplied uniform.
  • Complete cross-training to provide operational support with ground maintenance, operating a variety of motor vehicles and small equipment applicable to all seasons, such as snow removal and vegetation control equipment (as needed).
  • Assist with corporate initiatives related to compliance, SMS, and other topics.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

What you’ll bring to the table

  • Ability to work effectively independently and as a member of a team
  • Post-secondary education in aviation (or equivalent aviation knowledge and experience)
  • TP 312E course (or equivalent experience)
  • Restricted Operator Certificate with Aeronautical Qualification (ROC-A)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in order to respond to customers and complete required airport documentation procedures
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software
  • Valid G driver’s license with clean drivers abstract
  • Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (Level 2)
  • Ability to lift up to 30 kg
  • Ability to stand or sit for prolonged periods while at a desk, using equipment, or lifting, pulling, or managing heavy equipment and objects

Qualifications considered an asset

  • Auditing certification or experience
  • Airfield lighting maintenance course
  • Private pilot’s license or flight training experience
  • Chainsaw safety certification
  • Firearms Possession and Acquisition License
  • Current CPR and First Aid training
  • Working knowledge of runway surface condition reporting
  • DZ licence or heavy equipment operations experience

Working conditions

  • Approximately 50 per cent of this job’s duties will be performed outdoors.
  • The hours for this position will include duty manager shifts, weekends, statutory holidays, and rotational on-call duty as operationally required.
  • Due to the nature of this position, applicants must live within a one-hour drive of Peterborough Airport.
  • The Loomex Group has multiple locations within Canada. Depending on business needs and financial requirements, the incumbent may be transferred or requested to travel to another location as required. In the event of a transfer, the incumbent will be given appropriate advance notice in order to support a successful transition.
